Why is it difficult to describe the effects of [[Artificial Intelligence]]? I've been trying to figure this out. [[Artificial Intelligence]] applies to activities across many fields: research, design, communication, planning, and execution. And when you try to describe it with a sentence that is specific enough to explain one change, it automatically leaves others out. When you expand that description to cover everything you end up producing vague phrases like "[[Artificial Intelligence]] is transforming how we live and work." Something I am beginning to understand is that **a technological capability does not contain a complete account of its social consequences**. Once a new capability exists it's really hard to predict what's going to happen. That same capability can produce different outcomes depending on who uses it and what they use it for. In the case of [[Shopify]], describing a new capability is much easier than describing everything that follows from it. It's easy to show that [[Artificial Intelligence|AI]] can analyze a store and change its prices. This describes a specific capability. We can easily investigate whether it works. But it's difficult to then clearly describe the down stream effects of that capability. For example, it might mean that now one person can run a business that previously required a team. It might mean that ideas that did not make sense to pursue in the past because they required too much effort or were too niche are worth pursuing now. It might mean that the number of entrepreneurs in the world is about to exponentially increase. But all of those effects are much more difficult to describe. You can only verify them in hindsight when you reflect on how the technology has ran it's course, and by then, a new technology may have emerged.
